Fertilizers Europe has recently published the report “Industry Facts and Figures 2023”, which collects updated information on the European fertilizer industry. Some interesting data is summarized below:
• European production of nutrients in 2021 was 17.3 million tons (12.4 million tons of N; 2.1 of P2O5; 2.8 of K2O).
• Regarding global nutrient production in 2021 (259.1 million tons: 152.9 million tons of N; 62.2 of P2O5 and 44 of K2O), Europe produced 6.7 percent of the total (8.1 percent of total N, 3.4 percent of P2O5 and 6.4 percent of K2O).
• European consumption (EU-27) of nutrients in 2022 (including nutrients that go to other uses): 16 million tons.
• European foreign trade in 2022:
o Import: 5.1 million tons of N; 1 million P2O5 and 1.4 million K2O.
o Export: 2.3 million tons of N; 0.5 million P2O5 and 0.8 million K2O.
• Percentage of imported nutrients in European consumption in 2022: 45 percent of N, 46 percent of P2O5 and 58 percent of K2O.
• European agricultural nitrogen consumption in 2021/22: 9.1 million tons of N. 47 percent were nitrate-based fertilizers, 22 percent urea, 12 percent nitrogen solutions, 12 percent complex fertilizers and 6 percent remaining hundred other fertilizers.
• By 2032, European consumption of nitrogen and phosphorus is expected to decrease by 4 and 1 percent, respectively, and that of potassium will increase by 2 percent.
• Average turnover of the last 5 years: 12.3 billion euros.
• Average investment in the last 5 years: 1,200 million euros.
• Average number of employees in the last 5 years, including the supply chain: 76,000.
